SSRSB teachers honoured during Education Week 2013

Bridgewater, NS – Two South Shore Regional School Board (SSRSB) teachers will be among those honoured for their exceptional contributions to education on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the Education Week Teacher Award Ceremony in Halifax.

Mr. Greg Sutherland of Hebbville Academy and Ms. Vanessa Henwood of South Queens Junior High will each receive an award for their role in the education of South Shore students. Both teachers were nominated by members of staff at their schools.

This year’s theme Teaching for a Sustainable Future, recognizes outstanding Nova Scotia educators who integrate sustainability into their daily lessons. Learning for sustainable development can include lessons on climate change, biodiversity, poverty reduction and sustainable consumption. The award recipients also practice participatory teaching and learning methods to motivate and empower their students.

Some examples of Ms. Henwood’s dedication to sustainability in the classroom include up-cycling of salvageable fabrics in her Family Studies class. Ms. Henwood has students bring in fabric from home which would have otherwise landed in the garbage, to create tote bags, pillows and small blankets.

Mr. Sutherland is dedicated to drawing meaningful connections for his students between his course material and their local, national and global environments. He starts each lesson with a “Shot of the day” – a picture of any variety of global events, to engage students in meaningful conversation about events happening around the world that impact their lives.

“Mr. Sutherland and Ms. Henwood are wonderful examples of educators working with their students to understand responsibility and active citizenship. I have been told of the amazing teachers on the South Shore who teach their students about sustainability and it’s invaluable to have mentors like Mr. Sutherland and Ms. Henwood for staff and students,” said Dr. Jim Gunn, SSRSB Acting Superintendent of Schools.

Education Week is an annual week recognizing the greatness of educators around Nova Scotia. The week is a co-operative effort between the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the Nova Scotia School Boards Association, the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations, la Fédération des parents acadiens de la Nouvelle-Écosse, the Association of Nova Scotia Educational Administrators and the Department of Education.
