In June, 2023, the provincial government announced the replacement of New Germany Elementary and New Germany Rural High with one consolidated pre-primary to grade 12 school.
As per section 72 of the Nova Scotia Education Act, in order for the Province to proceed with starting work on site selection, design, and construction on the new building, SSRCE must put plans in place to consolidate the two existing buildings.
This webpage will be updated as we move through the project. Here’s where SSRCE currently is in the consolidation process:
- SSRCE staff met with school administration and school staff at both New Germany Elementary and New Germany High the week of Nov. 20, 2023.
- Public meetings for the school communities of WNES, NGES, and NGRHS took place on Tuesday, Dec. 5/23.
We will update this page as we move throughout the process.
We invite parents/guardians, and members of the community, to read through this Q&A for information on the consolidation process as well as next steps.
Q&A
Q: Has there been a site selected for the new New Germany PP-12 school?
A: No, this process cannot start until after we complete the consolidation process.
Q: Has the building been designed?
A: No, this process cannot start until after we complete the consolidation process.
Q: What do you mean to consolidate or the consolidation process?
A: This is simply part of the new school process. In order to build a new school, we technically have to consolidate the current schools which includes meeting with the school communities to explain the procedure. The actual consolidation of the two schools won’t take effect until the new school opens.
Q: What took place at the public meetings?
A: The meetings were a place to discuss the consolidation process in advance of the new build. Discussions around details of the new school will happen in the future, but currently there is no information to share as it relates to the new school specifically, as we are in the early stages of this process.
Q: What do we know about the new school so far?
A: The Province announced the replacement of New Germany Elementary and New Germany Rural High with one consolidated pre-primary to Grade 12 school in June. You can view their news release here. In addition to housing grades pre-primary to 12, we know the school will include a skilled trades centre.
Q: Does this mean there will be boundary review?
A: There are no current plans for any type of boundary review. Students who would attend NGES and NGRHS will attend this new school along with WNES students after they complete grade six.
Q: What will the name of the new school be?
A: We will share details on the process to name the school when we get to that stage of the project.
Q: Why are students from all grades attending school together?
A: The pre-primary to grade 12 school model is not new. In fact, it is done successfully at various schools throughout the province. Planning for the school layout and daily operation will factor in best practices when it comes to this grade configuration.
Q: What is the timeline for the new school to be open?
A: The Province has shared that the initial target opening date was September 2027. As this project is in the initial stages, we will continue to update this page with any information, as necessary.
