January 8, 2014Bridgewater, NS – An exciting new era for education in Queens County begins today with students from grades six to eight walking through the doors of the newly constructed South Queens Middle School.

“We are very excited about opening day,” said Principal Leo Campbell. “Many people have worked hard to make the dream of a new school a reality. This school is all about collaborative, engaging learning for our students.”

In September the former South Queens Junior High school opened as a middle school with the new grade configuration. Dr. JC Wickwire Academy is now grades Primary to five, South Queens Middle School is grades six to eight, and Liverpool Regional High School is grades nine to 12.

“South Queens Middle School is a highly efficient school, from the ultra-low-flow water fixtures to the use of natural light and an area dedicated to building facilities recycling,” says Superintendent of Schools Geoff Cainen. “Low-emitting materials were used throughout the building, and we have been very conscious of providing ample time for off-gassing. We wanted South Queens Middle School to be a healthy building.”

“The school has been designed to support inquiry-based and collaborative learning,” says Jeff DeWolfe, Director of Programs and Student Services. “The school is equipped with technology throughout the entire building, allowing for students to have access to innovative technology to enhance their learning.”

Students received an extended holiday break to allow teachers and staff time to move in. They begin classes on Wednesday, January 8th. An official grand opening event will be held at a later date, to be determined.
