The South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE) welcomes all parents and students, new and returning, to the 2018/19 school year. As the new school year gets underway, we are excited to live our mission of putting our students first and providing them with a learning environment that engages and inspires them to reach their full potential.
The Education system in our province has recently changed but one thing has not; our focus on student achievement and well-being. We strive to provide inclusive learning environments where all students feel supported.
As we get ready for students to be back in the classrooms on September 6, we have some messages to share with you about the upcoming year.
Increased Communication
Education is a partnership among home, school and community and one of our goals this year is to increase communication with you about what’s happening regionally and in schools. You will hear from us regularly and we also encourage you to follow ourselves on Facebook and Twitter, and your child’s school on their social media pages. The SSRCE and each school also have their own websites for further information sharing.
School Advisory Councils (SACs)
School Advisory Councils play an important role in supporting student success at the school community level. The important role of SACs will be further enhanced, beginning this school year. Along with representing the school community voice, council members will manage a budget that supports student achievement and provide advice on regional and provincial education policy development, starting with a new school extracurricular supervision policy coming later this year. For more information about your school’s SAC or how you can become involved, contact your school’s principal.
Bus Stop Information
Finding your child’s bus stop can be done online by navigating to bus.ssrce.ca
Once there, click the ‘parent portal’ button. Fill out the Student ID* and Home Civic Address Number. Choose your child’s school and grade. Click ‘sign in’ to display the bus route information. (*The Student ID number is a 10 digit number that can be found on an old report card. It typically begins with 310).
If you are having trouble you can contact the school’s administrative assistant.
If you have recently moved and haven’t updated the school with your new address, please do so immediately. To find out the closest bus stop contact our Transportation Department at 902-541-8252.
We’re here to Help
If at any time during the school year you have a concern or issue to raise, please speak with your child’s teacher. If the teacher can’t help, or if you are not satisfied with their response, you can talk to the principal of the school. At that time if the complaint has not been resolved please call our office to be connected with the appropriate person to assist you.
Coming Up in September
September 13 is Nova Scotia’s Stand Up Against Bullying Day and we are excited to launch our anti-bullying campaign. Keep an eye on our Facebook for more about how your child can get involved.
On September 30 we will recognize Orange Shirt Day to bring awareness and honour survivors of the residential school system. Each school will provide education and encourage discussion around the theme “Every Child Matters.”
We look forward to a successful school year and hope you join us in celebrating students at home, at school and in the community.
