SSRCE Statement on Tragic House Fire

All of us at the South Shore Regional Centre for Education are heartbroken to hear of the tragic house fire that took place in Auburndale on February 19. A teaching assistant at Bluenose Academy and three children died as a result of the fire. Two of the children attended Bluenose Academy, one in grade six and one in grade three.

In addition to our grief over this tremendous loss to our community, we also recognize the impact this tragedy has on the students and staff at our school. We are encouraging parents/guardians to talk to their children in advance of coming to school on Tuesday and ask that they reach out to the school if they require additional support or resources.

Beginning on Tuesday, February 22, there will be additional staff, including grief counsellors, at Bluenose Academy. They will remain at the school for as long as they are needed. Our staff are focused on supporting our students, as well was each other, and we ask that media refrain from contacting the school directly throughout this time of great sadness.
