On Tuesday, May 17, selected Grade 11 students from across Nova Scotia attended the Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal ceremony in Halifax.
The Lieutenant Governor’s Education Medal is awarded each year and open to Grade 11 high school students. Students are nominated by their school, based on academic performance and qualities of leadership and service demonstrated in their school and community.

Forest Heights Community School
Hannah Swinamer
Hannah is an academically strong student, who is enrolled in Advanced Chemistry, Advanced Biology, and Advanced English. She plans to continue onto AP for her Grade 12 year. Hannah is well-known and respected by her peers and is always willing to lend a hand. She is involved in many activities within her community, more specifically being a volunteer firefighter for the Martin’s River Fire Department. She has been a Junior Firefighter for almost 4 years and has recently been promoted to Junior Chief. Hannah is also an Ambassador for the Nova Scotia International Student Program, supporting International students at her school.
Emily Chaisson
Emily is an academically strong student who maintains a balance of school and community involvement. Although her main focus is academics, Emily leads with a servant’s heart and has a love for her community and volunteering. She is a member of the School Spirit Council and the Badminton team. Emily demonstrates her commitment to her community by volunteering with children and seniors at her local church and has a keen interest in civics. In her spare time, Emily enjoys drawing, video editing, and photography. Her dream is to one day work in the film industry.
Liverpool Regional High School
Noah Losier
Noah is an outstanding academic student and leader. While at LRHS, he has participated in Student Representative Council, Concert and Jazz Bands, and D&D Club. He is currently the Vice President of the LRHS Key Club. Outside of school, Noah builds upon his leadership skills volunteering for his local church, working as a student Pharmacy Technician, and officiating community sports like baseball and hockey. He is a Royal Conservatory pianist, level 7. He is currently working toward his Silver Award in the Duke of Edinburgh program. Noah exemplifies the essence of being a Warrior through his dedication to his school and community.
Courtney Whynott
Courtney is an exceptional academic student and leader who demonstrates compassion and empathy in all that she does. She actively participates in Student Representative Council, REP (Respect-Empathy-Positivity) Club, and the LRHS Key Club. Courtney is highly regarded by peers and staff alike. Courtney is also a volleyball player and a member of the school Cheerleading Team. When she is not practicing with her teams, she mentors younger cheerleaders at SQMS as a Junior Coach. Courtney represents the essence of being a Warrior through her compassion and dedication to her school and community.
New Germany Rural High School
Evan Gibson
Evan is a Grade 11 student at New Germany Rural High School. He strives to be very involved within the school. He enjoys playing sports and played youth football with the Seahawks as well as school soccer and basketball. Academics are important to him and his has worked hard to obtain a scholar average. This year he is an Ambassador through the Nova Scotia International Student Program and supports students attending his school from countries around the world. He is planning on running for Student Council president his graduating year.
Jaylene Nauss
Jaylene is a Grade 11 at New Germany Rural High School. She is academically driven and maintains a scholar average. Within the school community she is a member of the soccer team, who are provincial champions, and is a member of Track and Field. She is a member of the school Social Justice group, responsible for helping those in need. As well, Jaylene is an alumni of the Techsploration group, which educates young girls on careers in STEM. She is currently an Ambassador through the Nova Scotia International Student Program, who helps welcome students from around the world, as well as the Treasurer of Student Council.
North Queens Community School
Kayden Silver
Kayden is a dedicated student who has long been recognized for his academic excellence in science and math, as well as in his achievements in school sports. Last year, Kayden received his school’s Dear Award for: Determination, Excellence, Achievement and Respect. Outside of school, he has been an active member of the local 4H club for 9 years. During this time he has assisted with community cleanup efforts at the local medical centre, cenotaph, cemeteries, as well as the Queens County Exhibition, community halls, and roadside in the Caledonia area. In his free time, Kayden likes to read, play games with his friends, and spending time creating things with his 3D printer.
Thomas Waterman
Thomas is a student who loves to get involved with his community. He participates in most school sports including cross country, track and field and basketball. In addition, he is a member of his school’s Student Council and Chess Club. Thomas also holds a high academic standing in his classes and likes to volunteer at school by reffing games and helping move things for the cafeteria staff. Outside of school, Thomas regularly attends community activity nights which include floor hockey, volleyball, pickleball, and basketball. Thomas has also been a member of the South West Nova Beagle Club since age 5, where he helps train the dog breed for competitions.
Park View Education Centre
Owen Kosiba
Owen is a Silver level Honour Roll recipient. He is a part of the Options & Opportunities Program and an IB Certificate student. He is part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program, working towards his Bronze award. Owen is a hockey player with the South Shore Lumberjacks Midget team and participates in Track & Field and Cross Country at school. He takes private music lessons on the bass guitar. Owen’s commitment to his academic success, as well as his kind, gracious personality, are outstanding.
Hannah Allen
Hannah is a Gold level Honour Roll recipient and an IB Certificate student. She is the School Spirit/Event Coordinator for the Student Council and a multi-sport athlete, including Basketball and Cross Country. In the community, Hannah has volunteered for the NDP campaign, the Salvation Army and she has coached Surf Basketball. Her leadership, in particularly in athletics, in school and in community is outstanding.
